SITUATION UPDATE
• The IMD informed that heavy to very heavy rain with sustained winds of 40-50 kmph are likely to occur at one or two places in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts on May 30.
• Udupi district received 77.5 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, leading to damage to 10 houses, seven in Kundapur, and one each in Kaup, Karkala, and Brahmavara taluks. Coastal erosion in Udupi and Karwar has intensified, endangering nearby residents, with protective boulders washed away by strong sea currents.
• According to the Dakshina Kannada District Disaster Management Authority, seven houses in Bantwal taluk were partially damaged and two were fully damaged in the district during the period. 225 electric poles and 13 transformers of Mescom were damaged. Additionally, its power supply lines, which spanned 11.25 km, were damaged, and two bridges in the district were also damaged.
• In Bengaluru, which has experienced sporadic but intense spells of rain, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has mapped 201 flood-prone locations across its jurisdiction. Civic agencies have been instructed to remain prepared to act quickly if water levels rise in these areas. Read More
• Landslides in parts of Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru have disrupted road connectivity. The PWD cleared two minor landslides near Agumbe and is monitoring 40 other sites for slope stability. Statistical Overview District affected: 08
• Farmers in coastal and Malnad regions reported crop losses due to waterlogging in paddy fields and damage to coffee, arecanut, and other crops. According to the Agriculture Department, over 3,500 hectares of farmland across five districts have been affected.
• On 26th May, artificial flooding at Pumpwell junction in Mangaluru disrupted traffic, with service roads and nearby buildings submerged. In Bantwal and other taluks, water entered several houses. A school wall collapsed near State Bank, and a house under construction in Kadeshvalya also suffered wall damage. Widespread power outages were reported across the district. In Puttur, the municipal building’s compound wall collapsed, damaging three rickshaws.
• The Haveri district experienced severe pre-monsoon rainfall in May, preceding the regular monsoon season. By May 27, rainfall reached 118.8 mm, considerably higher than the typical 60 mm. These conditions resulted in seven human casualties and 53 animal deaths due to rain-related incidents, powerful winds, and lightning.
• In view of the worsening conditions in Mangaluru district, one team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been stationed in Puttur, while two State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed in Mangaluru and Subrahmanya. Officials have been directed to remain on high alert.
• The Pune Bengaluru Highway, a vital artery connecting Maharashtra and Karnataka, is grappling with severe flooding issues due to blocked drains and culverts along its service roads. This has resulted in significant traffic congestion, with jams extending up to 4–5 km, and submerged underpasses, severely affecting daily commuters.
• One Drowned, Six Rescued in Mysuru Flash Flood: Six medical students were rescued, but one tragically drowned in the Cauvery river near Bharachukki Falls, Mysuru. Authorities urge caution as rainfall continues in Karnataka.
