Pakistan - Earthquake: OCHA Situation Report No. 1


1. The US Geological Survey reported that a magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred at 34.43N, 3.54E on 8 October at 03:50 UTC (08:50 local time) in Pakistan. The epicentre was at 95 km NNE of Islamabad (pop 524,000), 115 km ESE of Mingaora (pop 174,000), and 125 km WNW of Srinagar, Kashmir (pop 894,000). . Total of four after shock tremors of M 5.9 (4:26 UTC), M5.4 (5:08 A.M. UTC), M5.6 (5:19 A.M. UTC) and M5.6 (5:26 A.M. UTC) were recorded.

2. Strong tremors were felt in northern Pakistan, rocking buildings in the capital Islamabad. Severe damage to buildings have been reported from Islamabad. At least two residential buildings collapsed in Islamabad. Army has been called in and rescue operations have started in the disaster site. According to Pakistan Television, 8 people have been killed and several shops damaged. Severe damage is in Pakistan Kashmir and Indian Kashmir, but no clear reports yet.

3. As communications are currently saturated, Telecoms Sans Frontiers is trying to assist in setting up a telecommunications center with satellite communications facilities. A communications expert is on stand-by in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and needs to reach Pakistan (email:, +33 559 844 360).
