Current situation
- Over 9.9 lakh people in 269 panchayats across 55 blocks in 16 districts of Bihar have been affected by the floods.
- Affected districts: West Champaran, East Champaran, Araria, Kishanganj, Gopalganj, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Muzaffarpur, Supaul, Siwan, Madhepura, Purnea, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Saran, and Saharsa.
- More than 500 villages remain submerged, forcing residents to seek refuge on higher ground such as national highways, state highways and embankments. WRD officials reported that over 70 villages in West Champaran were flooded, with more than 200 villages in East Champaran, Madhubani and Darbhanga also submerged. In Muzaffarpur, over 115 villages were inundated, while Saharsa and Madhepura were grappling with severe flooding in dozens of villages.
ON-GOING RESPONSES
- In response to the ongoing flood crisis, active youth groups at the community level are playing a crucial role in supporting affected individuals. They are helping to evacuate people from flooded areas to safer locations, transporting them to community kitchens set up by the government for meals. Special attention is being given to children and pregnant women, who are being escorted to health camps to receive necessary medical care.
- Government- Establishing relief camps and community kitchens to provide food and shelter to those affected. Additionally, deployment of boats, including specially designated medical boats, has helped facilitate rescue and evacuation efforts.
- 16 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and 17 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed for rescue and relief operations. Additionally, six more NDRF teams, three each from Ranchi and Varanasi, have been called in to assist. Air force helicopters were dropping dry rations to those stranded in remote, flood-affected villages.
