ON GROUND CHALLENGES
- The flash floods on 31st May 2025 hit without warning, giving residents no time to prepare. Most were forced to evacuate with only the clothes they were wearing.
- Floodwaters rose above 1 meter, leading to total loss of household belongings. Mud and debris have filled homes, rendering many shelters uninhabitable without urgent cleaning and structural support.
- Toilets and wells have been rendered non-functional due to flooding, forcing affected communities to adopt unsafe coping mechanisms, which has increased the risk of secondary public health crises.
- Despite unsafe conditions, many families have begun returning to damaged and decaying structures, where stagnant water and poor sanitation prevail. The combination of water stagnation, mud accumulation, and lack of clean water has created a fertile ground for vectorborne diseases, especially mosquito-borne illnesses.
- Children have lost essential school materials such as bags, books, and stationery. Most families are unable to afford replacements, threatening continued school attendance.
- Several students from nearby villages who lived in rented rooms in Senapati for schooling have lost all their belongings. However, being tenants, they are not currently eligible for official compensation schemes.
