1. UN RESIDENT COORDINATOR HAS ADVISED THAT, IN THE STATES OF ANDHRA PRADESH, TAMIL NADU, KERALA AND KARNATAKA, WHICH WERE HIT BY HEAVY TO TORRENTIAL RAINS MID OCTOBER 1996, 388 PERSONS HAVE BEEN KILLED, APPROXIMATELY 53,000 HOUSES HAVE BEEN DAMAGED, AND MORE THAN 45,000 HEADS OF CATTLE WERE LOST.

2. SITUATION IN ALL ABOVE-MENTIONED STATES IS BACK TO NORMAL EXCEPT FOR SOME DISRUPTION IN TRAIN SERVICES. HOWEVER, ANOTHER DEPRESSION HAS BEEN DETECTED IN THE SOUTH WEST BAY OF BENGAL.

3. NO APPEAL FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE HAS BEEN RECEIVED.

4. UN RESIDENT COORDINATOR IS IN TOUCH WITH THE GOVERNMENT AND CONTINUES TO MONITOR THE SITUATION.
