Subject: Impact of Earthquake in
Indonesia , A &N Islands and other coastal States -Relief, Rehabilitation
and other follow up measures
1. The Tsunamis have caused extensive damage in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the States of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu and UT of Pondicherry. 97 aftershocks of intensities between 5.0 to 7.0 on Richter scale have been reported so far. The death toll is now at 9571. This is likely to go up once confirmation regarding 5801 missing persons/feared dead (as per preliminary survey) in the Nicobar Group of Islands is received. The details of deaths, missing and relief camps are in Annexure I. The details of damage to crops, dwelling units and population affected are in Annexure-II.
2. An Integrated Relief Command (IRC) for the Andaman & Nicobar Groups of Islands has become operational and coordinating relief and rescue. Three Central Teams under overall supervision of Secretary (BM), Ministry of Home Affairs have left on 4th h January 2005 to visit Tamil Nadu, AP and Kerala for assessment.
3. The massive relief and rescue operations mounted by the Government of India in association with States/UTs are continuing. Focus is on establishing communication network, supply of food and drinking water, restoration of power supply, prevention of outbreak of epidemics and relief & rescue operations in the affected areas of Nicobar Group of Islands . 80% pipeline water supply has been restored in Port Blair, three water points have been established with DG sets in Car Nicobar, and in other islands water is available through wells/ springs and efforts are being made to restore piped water. 31 Telephone exchanges have been made operational, 22 satellite phones are functional and most of the affected islands have been connected with Police Wireless which has enhanced the communication facilities. Power has been restored in Nancowry Group and Kamorta, Emergency power has been established in Port Blair & Great Nicobar, 30 DG sets operating in Car Nicobar. Medical relief is under continuous surveillance by MoH. Medical expert team led by DGHS has arrived in Port Blair for networking health efforts. No report of outbreak of epidemics has been received so far.
4. The situation in various islands in Andaman district is stabilizing rapidly and life is returning to normalcy except little Andaman, which was worst affected in Andaman District. Situation is improving in other islands.
5. Relief materials (226 MT food items, 248 MT drinking water, 61 MT medicines/disinfectant, 7798 tents, 26563 torches, 635 Gen. Sets/Pump sets) have been delivered so far. The status of relief materials movement is in Annexure-III
6. 1362 personnel of Central Para Military Forces including specialists Search and Rescue Teams have been made available to A&N Administration besides the efforts of Armed Forces. These personnel are engaged in evacuation of people to safer places, disposal of dead bodies, road clearance, relief distribution etc. 80 Doctors and 20 nurses of Central Institutions are deployed in various Islands .
