India - Tropical cyclone FENGAL, update (GDACS, IMD, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 04 December 2024)

  • The passage of the tropical cyclone FENGAL over the Puducherry union territory and the neighbouring Tamil Nadu state, south-eastern India on 1 December, caused very heavy rainfall, strong winds, storm surges, floods and landslides that have resulted in an increased number of casualties and damage.
  • Media report, as of 4 December, 20 fatalities, of which 16 fatalities across the Tamil Nadu state - ten in the Tiruvannamalai city, four in the Chennai city, the capital of the state, one in the Ooty town, and one more in the Vellore city - and four fatalities in the Puducherry city, Puducherry union territory.
  • Over the next 24 hours, more heavy rainfall is still forecast over southern India, including the already affected area.
