India - Tropical cyclone FENGAL (IMD, GDACS, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 02 December 2024)

  • The passage of the tropical cyclone FENGAL over the Puducherry union territory and the Tamil Nadu state, south-eastern India on 1 December, caused very heavy rainfall, strong winds, storm surges, floods and landslides that have resulted in casualties and damage.
  • Media report, as of 2 December, three fatalities in the Chennai city, the capital of the Tamil Nadu state and a number of rescued families across the mentioned state. In addition, media also report hundreds of evacuated people and several rescued people across the Puducherry union territory.
  • Over the next 72 hours, more heavy rainfall is still forecast over south-eastern India.
