NATURE OF HAZARD: FLOODS

Flood situation in Gujarat is still grim. Worst affected is Surat district. As per the latest information, release of water from Ukai dam has come down i.e, instead of 900,000 cusecs it is 750,000 cusecs. However, because of the high tide outflow of water to the Arabian Sea is almost negligible. Presently, communication lines are down. Gujarat during last 24hrs received heavy rains. In a number of districts rainfall so far recorded this year has already has been above the average rainfall recorded in past ten years. In Narmada was 1271 mm till this morning (Aug9) where as the average rainfall in last ten years was only1059mm. In Vadodara till this morning it was 1205 mm against an average of 937mm of previous year. In Surat this year's 1376mm in the previous years.

Narmada River(Bharuch district) is flowing at 19ft as against the danger mark of 14ft., Tapi River(Surat district) is flowing at 12.40m as against the danger mark of 9.5m and Vishwamitri river in Vadodara district is flowing at 28.03ft as against 26ft. IMD forecast for Gujarat: Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 24hrs .

CURRENT SITUATION:

Flood affected districts in Gujarat are Vadodara, Bharuch, Navsari, and Surat. Six million people have been affected in 129 villages in Gujarat since last 24hours. Anand, Kheda Valsad have not reported water logging of low lying areas but relief camps are still functioning.

Warning issued with respect to filling capacity of are on Alert and 9 dams have received warnings.
