SITUATION UPDATE AND RESPONSE
- On 14 th October 2024 at 05:30 hours, a low-pressure area formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal. By 1130 hours on 15th October 2024, the system had intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal.
- The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression within the next 12 hours, likely reaching the northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjoining southern Andhra Pradesh coasts by the early morning of 17th October 2024.
- However, pull effect rains from the depression is expected in Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, North Tamil Nadu and North interior till 18th October with normal monsoon rains on and off for Chennai, surroundings and other North districts.
- Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been reported in four districts of Tamil Nadu, with the highest rainfall recorded as 130 mm in Pudukkottai and 100 mm in Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Kancheepuram districts.
- Two human lives have been lost in Tamil Nadu during the last 24 hours, and 29 houses have been reported damaged (1 fully and 28 partially). A total of 32 people are currently accommodated in one relief camp in Tamil Nadu.
- In Puducherry, heavy rainfall of 90 mm was recorded in the Yanam district. Coastal residents are being advised to move to safer areas.
- Due to the heavy rainfall warning, the Government has declared holidays for all government, government-aided, private schools, and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal on 15th October 2024. The Puducherry administration has opened 322 relief shelters for affected individuals.
- In Andhra Pradesh, heavy to very heavy rainfall has been recorded in Nellore (150 mm), Bapatla (140 mm), and Prakasam (80 mm) districts. So far, 499 people have been affected in five villages of Nellore and Prakasam districts, and 371 individuals have been evacuated and accommodated in six relief camps.
- A total of 18 NDRF teams have been deployed in the affected states and UTs: 10 teams in Tamil Nadu, 5 teams in Andhra Pradesh, and 3 teams in Puducherry. The Army, Air Force, and Navy units are on high alert.
- Sullurpeta in Tirupati district recorded a massive 220.4mm of rainfall on October 16, 2024, the highest in the district, nearly double that of Chittamur, which saw 134.4mm. Sullurpeta had experienced 54.2mm on Monday and 66.2mm on Tuesday before a sharp increase on Wednesday. Coastal areas, including Tada (122.4mm), Varadaiahpalem (121.2mm), Doravarisatram (112.8mm), and Vakadu (107.2mm), were heavily affected by the depression. Southern mandals like Vadamalpet (112.4mm) and Narayanavanam (107.2mm) also faced continuous downpours.
