India: Severe weather and flash flooding (IMD, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 11 July 2023)

Over 40 persons from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh died in the past 48 hours, with Himachal Pradesh having the highest death toll with 18. Delhi’s rivers are flowing above the danger level and people have been evacuated from low lying areas. There are also report of 17 deaths in Uttar Pradesh due to lightening in past 48 hours.

The damage to Himachal state is estimated to be over Rs. 4,000 crore (or roughly EUR 440 million).

Himachal Chief Minister has requested the central government to declare the floods in Himachal as a national disaster and release a special relief package, and the Prime Minister has taken stock of the situation.

IMD issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall for a few districts in Uttarakhand (with red alert), Uttar Pradesh, Sikkim and heavy rainfall in few districts of Himachal (with orange alert), Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, for next 24 hour.
