Project Details: DHAN Foundation is identifying unmet needs in Tirukollam, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam and filling those gaps. For instance in Tirukollam, they provided rice, oil and other provisions in 8 hamlets after finding out what each family needed. The grant will be utilized to provide immediate relief and will cover the 1000 families.

Latest Update: 300 fishermen families have already been covered.

Feedback expected: DHAN Foundation will submit an audited statement of accounts on the utilization of these funds. They will also send a report date-wise on the areas covered, number of people/families helped, quantity of items distributed, and photographs of relief work in progress.

Relief work for 5000 fishing community

Implementing Agency: Evangelical Social Action Forum (ESAF)

Amount Disbursed: Rs. 1,000,000

Project Details: ESAF is currently supporting 20 panchayats in Ernakulam and Thrissur Districts in Kerala. They are providing 5,000 fishing households with relief kits. The relief kit consists of rice, pulses, sugar and edible oil. They are also supporting small repairs to houses. Work will continue for the next 20 days.

Latest Update: Work has begun.

Relief for 28 fishing villages in the stretch from Kollengode, Kerala to Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu

Implementing Agency: Indian Association for Saving and Credit (IASC)

Amount Disbursed: Rs. 1,000,000

Project Status: to commence on 8th Jan

Project Details: In Kanyakumari, 693 people died due to the Tsunami disaster. Many houses, boats, catamarans, nets and property were destroyed. An estimated 42,000 fishing families was affected.

Latest Update: In view of the rapidly changing needs on the ground, they do not want to rush with help. They are mapping needs and will decide on 7th Jan. Their Board of Directors is meeting on 7th in Coimbatore to decide on how to spend the amount strategically to reach maximum beneficiaries efficiently.

Feedback expected: will be decided after project is determined. IASC will submit an audited statement of accounts on the utilization of these funds

To conduct medical camps in 6 Panchayats of Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Perayar and Surkhazi in Tamil Nadu

Implementing Agency: Meenakshi Mission Hospital & Research Centre (MHASEMAM)

Amount Disbursed: Rs1,000,000

Project Details: Medical camps in 6 Panchayats of Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Perayar and Surkhazi in Tamil Nadu Medical services will be provided for the next 15-20 days.

Latest Update: MHASEMAM is reaching out to 8,000 families in 6 panchayats of the most affected areas in Tamil Nadu. 26 Medical staff and 3 ambulances are present in these villages. Bread, biscuits and potable water are also supplied along with the medicines.

Feedback expected: Photographs of camps, date wise, places covered, no. of people attended to, no. medical personnel involved, expenses incurred, nature of medical help provided. MHASEMAM will also submit an audited statement of accounts on the utilization of these funds.

Co-ordinates efforts in Nagapattinam

Implementing Agency: South Indian Federation of Fishermen Societies, Trivandrum

Amount Disbursed: Rs1,000,000

Background: Nagapattinam is the worst affected district with 0ver 5000 deaths and with 10-12 villages completely washed away. The number of houses destroyed and fishing equipment destroyed is yet to be assessed. There are 112,000 people in 102 camps. Therefore, livelihood rehabilitation would involve producing and providing fishing units including boats, propulsion devices, and fishing gears, in addition to building houses, and instilling confidence in the people to get back to work.Relief activities started from day 2 and work will continue for another 15-20 days until the situation stabilizes.

Project Details: Relief for those affected in Kanyakumari & Nagapattinam. While data is still coming in, preliminary estimates indicate that the loss of life in Kanyakumari is estimated to be around 1500. The loss of houses is around 7800. The losses of fishing equipment is difficult to estimate and is likely to be over 10,000 boats, 1000-1500 motors and 30,000 nets.

Latest Update: An NGO coordination committee has been formed in the Nagapattinam Collector's office. About 50 volunteers are deputed to 50 relief camps in the affected villages. For every 5 relief camps, there is a coordinator who reports to the collector's office about the needs and the materials are disbursed by the NGO.

Feedback expected: SIFFS will provide information regarding the actual physical achievements and a summary of fund utilization.
