India: PM assures all help to flood hit Assam; death toll rises to 23
The death toll in Assam floods has risen to 23 with flood situation deteriorating in parts of the state.
The floods have left close to five lakh people affected across 15 districts.
According to state disaster management authority nearly 1100 villages are under water and nearly 41,200 hectares of crop area have been damaged.
The worst affected is Lakhimpur, where over 1.21 lakh people have been affected by the deluge, followed by Karimganj with more than 1.19 lakh sufferers.
Authorities are running 181 relief camps and distribution centres in 10 districts, where 17,744 persons are currently taking shelter.
Across the state, 1,88,148 animals and poultry have been affected by the flood waters.
Due to the impact of flood waters, many roads, embankments and bridges have been damaged in several districts.
State government has activated two toll-free helpline numbers - 1070 and 1079 - for the flood-affected.
The Forest department has deployed Drones at the Kaziranga national park to prevent poaching.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke to Assam Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal and took stock of the flood situation in the state.
The Prime Minister assured the chief minister of all possible assistance in relief work.
The chief minister said district authorities have been directed to extend best possible support to affected people.
