India, Pakistan - Monsoon rains, update (NDMI, NDMA, PMD, IMD, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 20 July 2023)

  • The number of casualties and of the evacuated people is increasing following the monsoon rainfall that has been affecting several parts of India and Pakistan.
  • In India, only during the last 24 hours, the National Emergency Response Centre (NDMI) reports as of 19 July, four fatalities and over 5,000 evacuated people and 589 damaged houses across 13 States. Since April, NDMI reports 747 fatalities, 23 missing persons, 614 injured people and more than 51,600 damaged houses throughout the Country. Additionally, 8 people in Jammu and Kashmir and 10 people in Maharashtra are reported to have died since yesterday due to landslides.
  • In Pakistan, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reports, as of 18 July, 99 fatalities, 175 injured people and 130 damaged houses across the Country since 25 June. Media also report, as of 19 July, 11 more fatalities occurred in the area of Islamabad, due to a house collapsing caused by the heavy rainfall.
  • Over the next 48 hours, more heavy rainfall is still forecast over central, western and northern India and over central and northern Pakistan.
