India: Orissa floods situation report, 4 Jul 2005


Incessant rains over the state of Orissa in the last week of June resulted in flash floods in 2 districts of Orissa - Bhadrak and Jajpur. Baitarani and its tributaries were in spate on 29th of June and affected these districts. And later, Kendrapada district was also affected by the flood waters on 1st July'05. The worst affected was the Bhadrak district but with less rainfall for the last 4 days, the major rivers in these districts have receded and flood condition is improving in these places.




DAMAGE DETAILS :

Bhadrak: four blocks -Dhamnagar, Bhandari Pokhari , Chandbali and Tihidi, 156 villages and 35 GPs with a total of 192,000 of people, 98,815 cattle and 4783 Ha of crop area, affected by the flood waters. No damage to houses and public properties have been reported so far except road communication disrupted at two places, at Kothar on Bhadrak - Aradi road and at Dobal on Dobal - Sendhapur road. Reported live lost is one.

Jajpur : The 2 blocks affected are Dasrathpur and Jajpur. Two GPs of each of the blocks have been affected and four breaches have been reported.

Kendrapada : 15 GPs and 36 villages have been affected in Ali block. The official count of the people affected by floods stood at 42,405 and crop area affected is 5,850 hectares.

GOVERNMENT MEASURES:

The State Revenue Minister, Sri Manmohan Samal visited the flood affected areas of Bhadrak and Jajpur on 30th June'05.

In Bhadrak: The Sub-Collector is camping at Dhamnagar and relief for three days has been initiated by the district administration. The Orissa Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) has been stationed at Doabal and Dhusuri in Dhamnagar. 20 nos. of country boats have been deployed for rescue operations. 7 nos. of mobile health team are engaged in the affected villages. 13 nos. of RWSS teams are engaged for disinfection of tube wells.

In Kendrapada: boats were deployed for rescue operations.
