NATURE OF DISASTER: FLOODS
The state of Orissa is suffering the 10th day of the flood since the 27th of August 2003. Continuous rains in the upper and lower catchments areas of the Mahanadi river system adjoining the state of Chattisgarh has worsened the current flood situation. 18 out of 30 districts are affected so far, namely Angul, Bargarh, Boudh, Bolangir, Cuttack, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Jharsuguda, Kalahandi, Kendrapada, Khordha, Koraput, Nayagarh, Puri, Sambalpur, Deogarh and Sonepur. Continuous and heavy rains have led to breaches along the river embankments, causing severe impact on the habitation, livelihood and health. Evacuation operations in the affected districts have already started. Medical teams have been deployed in the worst hit areas and key locations. The National / State, military, and paramilitary forces have been mobilized to assist in the severely affected districts. Road and communication infrastructure have also been badly hit in some parts of the state. As per the current information, the districts that have been severely affected population-wise, are Cuttack, Puri, Bolangir and Kendrapada.

PERCEIVED THREATS FOR NEXT 12 HOURS:

Forecast: Rainfall at many places over all the catchments except Upper Mahanadi where rainfall is expected at few places. Heavy rainfall(50mm or more) likely to occur at isolated places over all the catchments except Upper Mahanadi during next 48 hours.
