Amar Seva Sangam
Situation: Worst affected areas are Cuddalore, Nagapattanam and Coastal areas of Chennai.In Nagapattinam, 5 to 6 villages in the distance of 20 to 30 km are totally damaged. Around 5,000 people have died and more than 10,000 families have lost houses.
Current Activities: Organisation is distributing foodpackets to beneficiaries in collabaration with another NGO called LEAD to beneficiaries of Nagapattinam.Assessing need for construction of shelters for beneficiaries of Kolachal near Kainyakumari.
Needed: Going to start relief in collaboration with LEAD for Nagapattinam beneficiaries. The camp wil cost Rs23 lacs.Plan to take up construction of houses in Kolachal. The need will be decided based on assessement.
Hindu Mission Hospital
Situation: Coastal areas of Kanchipuram districts are affected.Organistion had organised a medical camp in a coastal village, about 20 kms from Chennai on Dec 26th. The camp was affected, and medicines, mobile van, equipments etc. worth Rs1 lac got damaged. One of their doctor is admitted to ICU.
Current activities: Organisation is sending their medical relief team at different places on the request of the Collector.They are rushing truck loads of safe drinking water.Organising medical camps and treating around 1,000 patients per day.
Needed: Organisation needs Rs50,000 per day towards treatment of injured people and dispensing medicines.Need clothes like blankets, bedsheets, towels, sarees, t-shirts, dhotis, bermudas, nighties etc.
Jeevan Blood Bank and Research Center
Situation: Nagapattinam area has been severely affected. They fear outbreak of diseases.There has been more panic with fresh alerts of Tsunami.
Current activities: Organisation has started 7 relief camps, each catering to 700 to 900 people.They are providing basic needs like food, drinking water, clothing and medicines to beneficiaries
Needed:
- Safe drinking water for 5 days: Rs150,000 (30,000 bottles per day at 5 per bottle) 10,000
- Banians and T-shirts: Rs300,000 (Rs30 per piece)10,000
- Lungis and sarees (cotton): Rs500,000 (Rs50 per piece)1,000
- L Water storage tank: Rs44,000 (20 tanks at 2,200 per tank)
- Stainless steel tumblers: Rs400,000 (20,000 tumblers at appr. Rs20 per tumbler)
- Contingency need to meet cost of soap, medicines etc.: Rs200,000
Association for Sustainable Community Development (ASSCOD)
Situation: 2,000 people in the coastal region have been evacuated.2,500 lives have been lost in Nagapattinam.
Current activities: Plan to organise medical camps and counselling sessions.
Needed: FoodpacketsDistribute clothes to 6,203 people (2,362 male, 2,445 female and 1,396 children).
ASSIST
Situation: Prakasham district is one of the worst affected places in Andhra Pradesh. 75 coastal villages of 10 mandals( blocks) where fishermen were dwelling are damaged. Offical figure is 38 deaths, but unofficially number could be quite high. About 1,000 people are missing. 10,000 people have been evacuated.
Current activities: Carrying out rescue operations.Providing supplementary food, clothing and medicines to 5,000 people of 18 villages of Vetapalem, Kothapatnam and Tanguturu blocks of Prakasam district for 3 days.
Needed:
- Supplementary food for 5,000 people for 3 days: Rs150,000 at Rs10 per person
- Food for 5,000 people for 3 days:Rs375,000 at Rs15 per person
- Medicines for 5,000 people: Rs250,000 at Rs50 per person
- Clothing: Rs1,250,000 (2 blankets per family) at Rs250 per blanket
ARDAR
Situation: Sea-level rose by 3 m above normal level and tidal waves hit the villages. Sea advanced by 100 to 200 m towards habitations in all 13 mandals (blocks) of Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts. However, there are no casualties.In Andhra Pradesh, the media focus is towards Nellore and Prakasam districts that are worst affected, however fishermen in other coastal districts like Krishna, East Godavari and West Godavari are also affected.Fishermen have not gone for fishing since 3 days and with a fresh alert from the government, there is panic in the area.
Current activities: Involved in evacuating people to safer places.Organisation has started relief work in 18 villages of East Godavari, West Godavari and Krishna districts.
Needed: Plan to support about 1,000 families. The support required is:
- Foodpackets for 3 days: Rs465,000 at Rs465 per family
- Clothes- 2 blankets per family: Rs150,000 at Rs75 per blanket
- Sanitation: Rs250,000 at Rs250 per family
- Repair of House for 500 families: Rs405,000 at Rs810 per family
- Livelihoods- repair of 200 nets: Rs400,000 at Rs2,000 per net
Centre of Environment and Development (CEAD)
Situation: Government has banned fishing for 3 days, so people do not have livelihood source.Area, where CEAD is working, 650 families have lost their nets and boats. The repair of each will cost Rs1,500 to Rs2,000.
Current activities: Involved in evacuation.Organisation is working in the areas of Andhra Pradesh that are worst affected.Providing food and clothing from their own resources and material locally collected.
Needed: Plan to provide food resources and clothing to 1,000 fishermen families, who cannot go for fishing for next few days. They have estimated following need:
- Food for 5 days: Rs579,000 at Rs579 per family
- Clothing: Rs200,000 at Rs200 per family
The Banyan
Situation: Cuddalore town is badly affected. Their team is assessing the needs of people. Their team was involved in retrieving bodies from beaches of Chennai.
Current activities: Organisation has undertaken relief work in collabaration with Bhoomika Trust, a Disaster Management Organisation. They are distributing kits, i.e. kitchen kits, grocery kits to beneficiaries and helping them to start rebuilding their lives and not depend on relief camps.
Needed:
- Ration kit (grocery, milk, vegetables etc.): Rs535 per family
- Kitchen kit (Utensils, water, stove etc.): Rs528 per family
- Toilet kit (soap,toothpaste etc.): Rs91 per family
- Shelter kit (Tarpaulin, poles, ropes etc.): Rs405 per family
- Clothes kit-male (Lungi, banian, shorts, towel): Rs132 per person
- Clothes kit-female (sari, petticoat, blouse, towel): Rs314 per person
HELP
Situation: In Prakasham district, 34 people have lost lives, 700 are missing, 53 villages have been affected and 4,000 people have been evacuatedLivelihoods are highly affected.
Current activities:
- Conducting meetings with Rotary and Lions Club to mobilise food, water and cloths
- Until now, they have spent Rs10,000 in mobilising the resources.
- Mainly involved in providing sanitation
Needed:
- Rs10,000 for relief work
- Foodpackets and clothing for kids
Kaingkarya
Current activities:
- Collecting relief material from Chennai and supplying to organisations who are working in affected areas
- Sending volunteers from colleges to work with the organisations who have actively undertaken relief work
Needed: Plans to start counselling centres at various places to help victims come out of trauma. They propose to take up the activities after 2 weeks
