India: Heavy rains lash Gujarat; 5,000 people evacuated

(Ahmedabad, July 5) About 5,000 people were evacuated from the low-lying areas of Navsari district Wednesday following heavy rainfalls in the entire south Gujarat region, officials said.

As the four districts in the southern part of the state witnessed heavy rains in the last 24 hours, Navsari district authorities were compelled to evacuate the people living on the banks of the Purna and Ambika rivers.

"We shifted 3,960 people from slums on the riverbank to Navsari town. We also evacuated people from Gandevi and Jalalpore blocks due to the overflowing of the rivers," said district collector R.C. Meena.

There were no reports of any casualty.

Rains also disrupted life in the cities of Surat and Valsad, which witnessed water logging.

Meanwhile, three people lost their lives late Tuesday in Ahmedabad. Two people were killed in two separate wall collapse incidents while the other was killed after a hoarding crashed on a car.

The rain toll in the state has reached 20.
