INDIA - GAS LEAKAGE AT BHOPAL
UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1
27 DECEMBER 1984

1. FURTHER TO TRAGIC GAS LEAKAGE 3 DECEMBER 1984 WHICH KILLED APPROXIMATELY 2,500 PEOPLE AND AFFECTED OVER 150,000, ASSISTANCE NOW NEEDED FOR SURVIVING VICTIMS OF EXPOSURE TO TOXIC GAS.
EVACUEE CAMPS HAVE BEEN SET UP. APPROX 70,000 PERSONS NEEDING MEDICAL ATTENTION, OF WHICH 2,000 CURRENTLY HOSPITALIZED. SYMPTOMS INCLUDE EYE, CHEST AND OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS. LONG-TERM EFFECTS NOT YET DETERMINED.

2. LEAGUE OF RED CROSS/RED CRESCENT SOCIETIES REPORTS RELIEF NEEDS IDENTIFIED BY INDIAN RED CROSS INCLUDE TENTS, MOBILE MEDICAL UNITS, BLANKETS, CLOTHING, AND DSM FOR APPROX 50,000 PEOPLE.

3. GOVERNMENT OF INDIA INDICATES IT WILL ACCEPT CASH CONTRIBUTIONS FOR PRIME MINISTER'S RELIEF FUND WHICH IS READILY AVAILABLE TO ASSIST VICTIMS BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY. DONORS ARE INVITED TO
INFORM UNDRO OF THEIR PLANNED CONTRIBUTIONS.

1. IN RESPONSE TO UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1 OF 27 DECEMBER THE FOLLOWING DONORS HAVE REPORTED CONTRIBUTIONS TO UNDRO:

A) UK GOVT: PROVIDED MEDICAL EQUIPMENT TO MINISTRY OF HEALTH ON 13-14 DECEMBER, VALUE PDS STERLING 165,000 (US DLRS 199,760).

B) US GOVT: OFDA PREPARED TO MAKE CONTRIBUTION OF US DLRS 165,000 IN RESPONSE TO NEEDS OF INDIAN RC, AS STATED IN LICROSS APPEAL OF 14 DECEMBER.

C) US: WORLD VISION INTERNATIONAL PROVIDING EMERGENCY MEDICINES (INITIAL CONTRIBUTION). VALUE US DLRS 16,000.

2. DONORS ARE REQUESTED TO INFORM UNDRO DIRECTLY, PREFERABLY BY TELEX (28148 UNDR CH) OF THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS AND VALUE.

1. FOLLOWING UNDRO INFORMATION REPORTS OF 27 AND 28 DECEMBER, FURTHER CONTRIBUTIONS REPORTED TO UNDRO BY DONORS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

A) CANADA, GOVT: PROVIDED US DLRS 100,000 FOR ESTABLISHING AN EYE CARE CENTRE FOR GAS VICTIMS AND US DLRS 50,000 THROUGH LRCS.

B) NETHERLANDS, GOVT: PROVIDED MEDICAL EQUIPMENT TO MINISTRY OF HEALTH, VALUE 155,000 D. GUILDERS (US DLRS 43,662) FOR SUPPLY OF MEDICAMENTS.

C) SWITZERLAND, RED CROSS: PROVIDED S.FR. 50,000 (US DLRS 19,380) FOR SUPPLY OF MEDICAMENTS.

2. DONORS ARE REQUESTED TO INFORM UNDRO DIRECTLY, PREFERABLY BY TELEX (28148 UNDR CH) OF THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS AND CORRESPONDING VALUE.
