India - Floods update (DG ECHO, DG ECHO Partners, IMD) (ECHO Daily Flash of 26 August 2024)

  • Tripura, located in Northeast India, has experienced significant flooding due to extraordinary rainfall over a 72-hour period starting as of 19 August 2024.
  • The floods and resulting landslides have affected nearly 1.7 million residents across all eight districts, leading to the displacement of over 117,000 people who are now sheltered in 557 relief camps organized by the district authorities.
  • The State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) has confirmed 26 fatalities and reported that approximately 20,300 homes have been damaged.
  • In response to the crisis, five teams comprising the National Disaster Response Force and the State Disaster Response Force, with a total of 500 volunteers, are actively involved in conducting relief and rescue operations. These teams have successfully distributed 27,000 food packets to those affected by the flooding.
