Even as the flood situation in Madhya Pradesh,
Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh improved, heavy rainfall in Rajasthan has
resulted in 10 rivers overflowing and flooding Pali, Sirohi, Udaipur, Banswara,
Jhalawar, Dungarpur, Kota, and Chittorgarh districts. Highways and rail
routes in Barmer district are submerged, badly affecting traffic movement.
Several rivers like Luni are overflowing, obstructing road traffic at many
places on the Jodhpur-Barmer route.
Due to the rain in the catchments there
is heavy inflow into the Dharoi dam on the Sabarmati river, forcing discharge
of 300,000 cuesecs of water on the night of 19 August. As a result, low-lying
areas of Ahmedabad (in Gujarat) are inundated with two to three feet of
water, and more than 60,000 people have been evacuated from areas near
the banks of Sabarmati and Mahi rivers. Many areas of Ahmedabad are under
water and more than 20,000 people have been evacuated from the city. Excess
rain water is also being released from other dams including Gandhi Sagar,
Ranaprtap Sagar, Kota Dam, Beesalpur, Jawai, Jakham, Jaisamand, Mahi and
Gambhiri.
The flood situation in 26 villages of Daskroi and Dholka blocks of Ahmedabad district remained unchanged as waters of the Sabarmati river have not receded. The Sardar Sarovar dam continues to overflow at 124.31 metres, against the 119-metre height of the under-construction dam. Low-lying areas of Vadodara and Bharuch districts along the Narmadariver remained flooded as 400,000 cusecs of water flowed from the Sardar Sarovar dam. Traffic on 205 routes in central and northern Gujaratregions remained disrupted.
Meanwhile, in the East, continuous rains for the past few days in Chinaand Bhutanhave resulted in waters of all rain fed rivers of Chinaand Bhutansurging against the Jampani Bandh. If the Bandh is breached Udalguri, Darrang, and some other parts of lower Assamrisk being engulfed by flash floods.
