SITUATION

1. UN RESIDENT COORDINATOR REPORTED THAT, DUE TO INCESSANT RAINS DURING FIRST WEEK OF SEPTEMBER, SEVERAL VILLAGES IN STATES OF HARYANA AND PUNJAB WERE INUNDATED. AS A RESULT OF RELEASE OF EXCESS WATER FROM TALEWALA BARRAGE IN HARYANA, WATER LEVEL IN RIVER YAMUNA HAS RISEN 1.7 M ABOVE DANGER LEVEL. WATER LEVEL TOUCHED PEAK ON 7 SEPTEMBER AND IS LIKELY TO RECEDE GRADUALLY IN NEXT FEW DAYS.

2. GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS ANNOUNCED THAT SITUATION WAS UNDER CONTROL AND THAT THERE WAS NO THREAT TO HUMAN LIFE. ASSESSMENT OF DAMAGE TO PROPERTY WILL BE CARRIED OUT AFTER WATER RECEDES.

NATIONAL RESPONSE

3. MORE THAN 10,000 PEOPLE FROM LOW LYING AREAS ON BANKS OF YAMUNA HAVE BEEN EVACUATED IN ARMY BOATS. EVACUEES ARE BEING ACCOMMODATED IN SCHOOLS AND OTHER TEMPORARY SHELTER. GOVERNMENT AND NGOS ARE PROVIDING WATER, FOOD AND MEDICAL SERVICES.

4. GOVERNMENT HAS NOT MADE ANY APPEAL FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE. UN RESIDENT COORDINATOR IS MONITORING SITUATION.
