1. DUE TO THE FORMATION OF A LOW PRESSURE FRONT IN SOUTHWEST BAY OF BENGAL ON 16 OCTOBER, HEAVY TO TORRENTIAL RAINS WERE EXPERIENCED IN THE COASTAL DISTRICTS OF THE STATES OF ANDHRA PRADESH, TAMIL NADU, KERALA AND KARNATAKA.

2. ACCORDING TO THE PRELIMINARY INFORMATION FROM THE GOVERNMENT, ABOUT 170 HUMAN LIVES HAVE BEEN LOST IN THOSE STATES AND MORE THAN 3,000 HOUSES HAVE BEEN DAMAGED.

3. THE STATE OF ANDHRA PRADESH, MOST SEVERELY HIT, RECEIVED A RAIN FALL RANGING FROM 10 TO 23 CENTIMETERS PER DAY FROM 17 TO 20 OCTOBER. THE RAINS CAUSED LARGE SCALE INUNDATION OF NATIONAL HIGHWAYS AND RAILWAY TRACKS, AND LARGE SCALE DAMAGE TO CROPS.

4. MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE IS COORDINATING DISASTER MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES. ADMINISTRATIONS IN THE AFFECTED STATES HAVE OPENED CAMPS TO SHELTER MORE THAN 86,000 PERSONS. HELICOPTERS AND ARMY BOATS HAVE BEEN MOBILIZED TO DELIVER FOOD AND WATER TO THE MAROONED VILLAGES.

5. NO APPEAL FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE HAS BEEN RECEIVED.

6. UN RESIDENT COORDINATOR CONTINUES TO MONITOR THE SITUATION.
