India: Floods DREF Bulletin No. MDRIN002 Update No. 2

In Brief

This DREF Bulletin is being issued based on the situation described below reflecting the information available at this time. CHF 100,000 was allocated from the Federation's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to respond to the needs in this operation, targeting 10,000 beneficiaries (equivalent to 2000 families) in four states. This operation is expected to be implemented over 3 months, and will be completed by November 2006; a Final Report will be made available three months after the end of the operation (by 28 February 2007). Development of this operation is reported in this update with detailed information and plan distribution as outlined below.

This bulletin is an update on the DREF actions as well as other efforts carried out by the IRCS national and state level from existing resources. Further updates will follow. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

Background and current situation

The flood situation in India is slowly returning to normal, but still there are a few interior areas in Gujarat, Maharastra and Andhra Pradesh which are water logged or inundated. Below is a detailed analysis, taken from the report of UNDP India.

According to the report, the southwest monsoon has been active over India covering a) eastern India - Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura except Bihar, Jharkhand & Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and b) Central India -Vidarbha and over south Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Maharashtra of West India c) sub-divisions of Konkan & Goa, Coastal Karnataka and southeast Peninsula region including the states of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh.
