India: Flood forces review of Ahmedabad riverfront development

Ahmedabad's civic authorities have been compelled to review the ambitious riverfront development project following heavy floods in the Sabarmati river last month.

(Ahmedabad, Sep 12; IANS) After the floods caused damages worth Rs.43 million to the ongoing Rs.12 billion beautification and land development project on the riverbed, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has approached the National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee (NIH) for a hydraulic study.

The institute will study the river's carrying capacity and see if the execution of the project would impact the river's ecology.

"We don't want to reduce the carrying capacity of the Sabarmati river. If the institute comes up with some suggestions, we are ready to make changes in the project," municipal commissioner I.P. Gautam told reporters here Tuesday.

However, the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRDFC), the agency executing the project, said it had taken into consideration the data of floods in the river during the last 100 years.

"The carrying capacity of the river is 475,000 cusecs currently. The project will only improve the situation," said Surendra Patel, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) parliamentarian and former chairman of the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA).
