India’s monsoon has become active after a relatively dry spell over North-Western India in the month of July, with heavy rainfall occurring in states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, East Rajasthan, and Punjab, Uttaranchal , Haryana and Himachal Pradesh as recorded from 1st August. This could dispel the specter of drought in several North-Western States. The South-West monsoon has been vigorous over Bihar , Assam North-eastern states, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan & Goa, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and active over Orissa, and Karnataka Rain and thundershowers have occurred at many places over Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir and at a few places West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, West Rajasthan, Kerala and Rayalaseema. It was isolated in the rest regions of the country outside Lakshadweep where weather was mainly dry.
MAP - Flooding in the North-western states
The occurrence of torrential Rains as reported in northwestern part of India during the past 48 hrs in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarancha, Rajasthan, Haryana ahs been due to the revival in South-West monsoon in central and western region as another low pressure is likely to intensify in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea. The northwest region had received 40-60 % deficient rainfall till July 28 and has been experiencing a wet spell over the last two days as the monsoon system has revived by extending its circulation over states . IMD experts reported he monsoon has entered an active spell with rainfall over North-Western region including Konkan, Goa, across Maharashtra, Gujarat and east Rajasthan, Delhi, and isolated parts of Uttaranchal Punjab and Himachal Pradesh . The forecast for the north-western region is a possibility of more rains to occur with the intensity likely to reduce but it will not go dry. The four-month monsoon beginning from June to September accounts for 80% of the country's rainfall. With almost two-thirds of the country is dependent on rains for irrigation and agriculture the failure of the monsoon during July was seen to mar the farming sector yield, thereby impacting economic growth and the livelihood of 580 million people and not only overcoming the water crisis but also being able to sow late season short duration crops.
Flash Flood during last 48 hrs in North-Western states of Gujarat. Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab
During the last 48 hours the districts of Val sad, Surat, Navsari, Bharuch and Dangs have had receiving unprecedented rains as compared to rest the districts in the state. The catchment areas of the rivers Tapti, Mahi, Narmada in south Gujarat have received rains, causing the tributaries to swell. The occurrence of torrential rains has flooded the low lying flood plain areas marooning villages in Valsad, Sutra, Navsari and Bharuch. Torrential rains lashed Punjab affecting districts of Patiala and Ropar. The Ghaggar River is reported to be over flowing at Bhankharpur near Dera Bassi, flooding villages in its immediate vicinity by up to two feet water While Tangri River, Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal and Narwana branch of Bhakra Mainline Canal (BMC) had breached at four places. In Haryana in Punchkula district seasonal rivulets has risen and the Shivalik range of Himachal Pradesh in Solan district Kandaghat, and Kahu blocks have been affected due to water logging . The Pandoh Dam in Mandi district has been filled to the maximum water level while the Bhakra Beas Management Board has opened three of the five flood gates to bring down the dam’s water level to normal level. In Maharashtra Khed block (Dist Ratnagiri), Mumbai Block (Latur Dist) and blocks Mahabaleshwar, Velhe Mulsigaon, Bhor, Junnar, Maval, Abegaon in Pune Districts and Satara and Nasik district have been affected.

Deaths
In the four affected districts of Gujarat the death toll in the last 48 hours is reported to be either due to drowning or electrocution and collapse of houses is more than 150.
Infrastructure Networks Affected
National Highway from Valsad to Bombay was temporarily closed for the safety of people and later on review of position; light vehicles were allowed for traffic.
Due to rock falls along the Pune-Mumbai Expressway stretch between Khandala and Khopoli the Expressway has been closed to traffic by the MSRDC while the debris were cleared
The water level in the Mula-Mutha Dam in Pune had 94% of the excess flow of water stored in the reservoir and the Authority has released 25% of the water during the day and 50% during night.
In Mumbai, Thane and Nasik Movement of local and long-distance trains, both on the Central and Western lines were affected due the heavy downpour and water logging in the low lying areas. There are reports of collapse of houses in Mumbai but not causality
The road traffic was badly affected on the Ambala-Chandigarh national highway as portion of the road was washed away near the Punjab-Haryana border. Chandigarh-bound vehicles have been diverted via Punjab side.
The vehicular traffic on Ambala-Rajpura road had to be made one-way following breach in the Ghaggar River. The diversion of the traffic was done to provide shelter to the people of Devi Nagar area of Ambala.
Gujarat Electricity Board power supply was shut down where the sub-station was flooded with Water to prevent further causalities.
The Pune Flood Control Room has been activated and the Municipal Engineers of the Building permission have be posted on duty at all bridges in the City.
Rescue Operations:
- Rescue teams from Ahmedabad, and Rajkot districts were also deployed with the rescue tenders and boats equipments.
- SRP teams were also deployed from Baorda and Rajkot District to the affected areas.
- Local private boats and swimmers were also deployed for the saving of human lives and rescue/evacuation of people.
- District administrations are taking care to provide all necessary rescue and relief measures round the clock.
- State Emergency Operations Center is also in touch with various districts, departments and authorities.
- The Army has been deployed along the overflowing Ghaggar River to evacuate the affected people from the inundated villages in Patiala district, Punjab.
- 1069 families residing along the river bank of Mula-Mutha in Pune have been evacuated by the Municipal authority to temporary shelters.
Assistance
The State Government of Gujarat has requested the help of Army and the Air force to be deployed for rescue activities. 79,000 food packets were distributed to the evacuated persons in Valsad, Surat, Navsari, Bharuch and Dangs. Water purifying chlorine tablets, ORS packets and chlorination work is being carried out by the health officers.
The Pune districts authority has provided temporary shelter in the municipal schools for the 1069 families
Present Remarks issued by IMD
As per IMD reports the low pressure area (LAP) currently over lays over Northwest Bay of Bengal off Orissa-West Bengal coast has become well marked over the same area. It is associated with the upper air cyclonic circulation extending upto 7.6 km a.s.l. And tilting south-west wards with height. The system is likely to intensify further into a depression and move in a west-north-westerly direction. The low pressure area over north-west Madhya Pradesh and adjoining East Rajasthan has weakened and now lies as an upper air cyclonic circulation over central parts of Rajasthan and extends upto 4.5 km a.s.l.
Progress of South-West Monsoon:
The axis of South-West monsoon trough at sea level passes through Phalodi, Sawai Madhopur, Sagar, Jharsuguda, centre of the well marked low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and thence southeastwards to Andaman Sea. The trough of low pressure extending from South Gujarat coast to Karnataka coast persists. The Monsoon is strong over Central Arabian Sea and moderate to strong over North-East Arabian Sea, South-West Arabian Sea and moderate over South-East Arabian Sea.

Rain or thundershowers is likely to occur at most places over Konkan & Goa and Coastal Karnataka and at many places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Orissa, Uttaranchal, Punjab, Haryana including Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat Region, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Kerala and at a few places over rest of the region.
Heavy rainfall warning
Scattered heavy rain with isolated very heavy falls is likely to occur at a few places with isolated very heavy rainfall over Konkan & Goa, coastal Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, south Madhya Maharashtra, and Gujarat region, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana. The outlook for subsequent 48 hours is increase in ongoing rainfall activity over east-central India.
