Over 250 districts in 10 states of the country are reeling under severe drought.
These states are home to around 33 crore people, that is nearly one-fourth of the population of the country.
The worrisome situation related to drought was also reflected in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
The house held a short duration discussion on the prevailing drought situation and water scarcity in many parts of the country.
Responding to the discussion, Agriculture Minister radha mohan singh said that centre is providing all necessary support to the states.
He said said through initiatives like fodder development program, government is providing aid to the affected farmers.
According to the government, first installment of aid for the ten drought-affected states has already been sent.
Most of the aid in the past couple of years has be given to Uttar Pradesh.
Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti acknowledged that there is water scarcity in the country and water level of major water reservoirs have come down by around 11 billion cubic metre water.
She however assured that preparation are place to ensure that no ones suffers due to shortage.
Earlier, many members of the house expressed concern over the drought situation and the shortage of water.
They also gave a number of suggestions to the government.
