UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1

1. WORST CYCLONE IN MORE THAN A DECADE HIT SOUTHERN INDIAN STATE OF ANDHRA PRADESH 9 MAY AND INFLICTED SERIOUS DAMAGE AND CASUALITIES.

2. UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS FOLLOWING. DEATH TOLL HAS RISEN TO ABOUT 200 WHILE 2.6 MILLION PEOPLE AFFECTED. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO ROAD AND RAIL COMMUNICATIONS WITH PASSENGERS STRANDED. MANY VILLAGES ISOLATED AND SUBMERGED.

3. ALTHOUGH CYCLONE MORE SEVERE THAN 1977 ONE WHICH KILLED 10,000 PERSONS, CASUALITIES THIS YEAR CONSIDERABLY REDUCED DUE TO TIMELY WARNINGS AND EVACUATION CAMPAIGN.

4. GOVT LAUNCHED MASSIVE RELIEF AND RESCUE OPERATIONS 11 MAY. AERIAL SURVEY OF AFFECTED AREAS BEING UNDERTAKEN AND FOOD PACKETS DROPPED USING ARMY AND NAVAL HELICOPTERS.

5. GOVT HAS NOT REQUESTED INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.

1. WEATHER FORECAST INDICATES THAT WIDE SPREAD RAINS WILL CONTINUE OVER NORTH COAST ANDHRA PRADESH WITH ISOLATED HEAVY RAINFALL OVER SRIKAKULAM, VIZIANAGARAM AND VISAKHAPATNAM
DISTRICTS DURING NEXT 24 HOURS.

2. UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS DEATH TOLL NOW RISEN TO 433. OVER 6.5 MILLION PEOPLE ESTIMATED TO BE AFFECTED. AUTHORITIES PUT MATERIAL LOSSES AND CROP DAMAGE AT USD 590
MILLION.

3. GOVT UNDERTAKING EXTENSIVE RESCUE AND RELIEF MEASURES. RELIEF TEAMS, INCLUDING MILITARY, ABLE TO REARCH ALL NINE AFFECTED DISTRICTS EXCEPT FEW VILLAGES AROUND MACHILIPATNAM WHICH STILL INACCESIBLE. RELIEF OPERATIONS, HOWEVER, COULD BE HAMPERED BY EXPECTED NEW RAINFALL.

1. UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS DEATH TOLL RISEN TO 514. ALSO, RECENTLY HARVESTED RICE CROP SEVERELY DAMAGED.

2. RELIEF AND RESCUE OPERATIONS INTENSIFYING. FOOD, DRINKING WATER, MILK AND OTHER ESSENTIALS LIKE KEROSENE RUSHED TO AREAS. MILITARY HELICOPTERS CONTINUE AIRDROPPING OF FOODPACKETS IN SOME ISOLATED AREAS. 1,100 MEDICAL TEAMS DISPATCHED TO AFFECTED AREAS.

3. RED CROSS PROVIDING WATER TANKS, CEREALS, COOKING OIL AND MEDICINES. WCC/CICARWS ISSUED APPEAL FOR USD 262,000 TO MEET IMMEDIATE NEEDS. LWS/CALCUTTA SENDING TEAM TO CONDUCT SURVEY IN GUNTUR DISTRICT. WORLD VISION PROVIDING USD 160,000 FOR FOOD, BLANKETS AND UTENSILS.
