1. A CYCLONE HIT THE DISTRICTS OF EAST AND WEST GODAVARI IN ANDHRA PRADESH STATE, INDIA, ON THE NIGHT BETWEEN 6 AND 7 NOVEMBER.

2. THE UN RESIDENT COORDINATOR REPORTS THAT THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT'S LATEST FIGURES ON DAMAGE STAND AS FOLLOWS: DEATH TOLL 848 PERSONS, HOUSES DAMAGED 594,000, CROPS AREA DAMAGED 496,00 HA, LIVESTOCK LOST 13,507, POULTRY LOST 2,079,000.

3. MORE THAN 1,000 FISHERMEN WHO WERE MISSING SINCE 6 NOVEMBER 1996 HAVE RETURNED SAFELY.

4. THE SITUATION IN THE AFFECTED AREAS HAS IMPROVED CONSIDERABLY WITH RESTORATION OF ROAD AND COMMUNICATION LINKS TO ALL THE URBAN AREAS AND SEVERAL VILLAGES.

5. CONTRARY TO MEDIA REPORTS, THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA HAS NOT APPEALED FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE. HOWEVER, THE STATE GOVERNMENT OF ANDHRA PRADESH HAS APPEALED TO OTHER INDIAN STATES TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE CHIEF MINISTRIES RELIEF FUND, BASED ON WHICH SOME STATES HAVE CONTRIBUTED FUNDS AND OTHER MATERIAL.

6. THE UN RESIDENT COORDINATOR WILL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THE SITUATION, BUT UNLESS NEW DEVELOPMENTS OCCUR, THIS WILL BE THE LAST INFORMATION REPORT.
