2. IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE, A CYCLONIC LOW PRESSURE IN THE ARABIAN SEA PASSED 100 KMS AWAY FROM THE BOMBAY COAST AND STRUCK THE COASTS OF GUJARAT ON 18-19 JUNE 1996. DUE TO THE HEAVY RAINS, STRONG WINDS UP TO A SPEED OF 100 KMPH AND HIGH WAVES, 10 SHIPS NEAR BOMBAY PORT RUN AGROUND. THE CREW FROM THESE SHIPS HAVE BEEN RESCUED WITH THE HELP OF ARMY HELICOPTERS. THE CYCLONE WHICH PASSED THROUGH GUJARAT COAST CAUSED HAVOC BY UPROOTING TREES, DAMAGING HOUSES AND WASHING AWAY CROPS.

3. ALL THE COASTAL STATES HAVE WARNED FISHERMEN NOT TO VENTURE INTO THE SEA UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. DUE TO THE WEAKENING OF THE CYCLONE, THE SITUATION IN THE NORTH WESTERN STATES OF MAHARASHTRA AND GUJARAT IS UNDER CONTROL. HOWEVER, AS A PART OF THE SOUTH WEST MONSOON, THESE STATES ARE STILL RECEIVING HEAVY RAINFALL. SIMILARLY, THOUGH HEAVY RAINS ARE STILL LASHING THE SOUTHERN STATES OF ANDHRA PRADESH, KERALA AND TAMIL NADU DUE TO THE ON-GOING MONSOON SEASON, THERE IS NO REPORT OF FRESH LOSS TO LIVES OR PROPERTY.

4. THE UN/DHA RESIDENT COORDINATOR IS MONITORING THE SITUATION IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH THE GOVERNMENT AUTHORITIES.
