INDIA - CYCLONE
DHA-GENEVA INFORMATION REPORT NO.1

SITUATION

1. ON 4 DECEMBER 1993, A SEVERE CYCLONE HIT SOUTHERN INDIA CAUSING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE IN TAMIL NADU AND IN KARAIKAL REGION OF PONDICHERRY. ELECTRICAL AND TELECOMMUNICATION POLES AND HUNDREDS OF TREES UPROOTED, DISRUPTING ROAD AND RAIL TRAFFIC AND COMMUNICATION LINKS. TORRENTIAL RAINS CONTINUE TO LASH THE AFFECTED AREA.

2. AS OF 6 DECEMBER, AT LEAST 54 PEOPLE REPORTED DEAD AND 30,000 HOUSES DAMAGED. SOME 60,000 AFFECTED PEOPLE CAMPING IN PUBLIC SHELTERS.

3. RESCUE AND RELIEF OPERATIONS UNDER WAY. GOVERNMENT DOES NOT INTEND TO REQUEST INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE. HOWEVER, SPONTANEOUS CONTRIBUTIONS WOULD BE WELCOME, AND COULD BE CHANNELLED THROUGH THE PRIME MINISTER'S RELIEF FUND OR OTHER ESTABLISHED RELIEF
CHANNELS.

4. FOR COORDINATION PURPOSES, DONORS ARE REQUESTED TO INFORM DHA-GENEVA AS INDICATED BELOW OF PLEDGES/CONTRIBUTIONS AND THEIR CORRESPONDING VALUE.

SITUATION

1. UN/DHA RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE PROVIDES FOLLOWING UPDATE ON THE IMPACT OF THE CYCLONE THAT HIT SOUTHERN INDIA ON 4 DECEMBER 1993.

2. NUMBER OF DEATHS WENT UP TO 61. WHILE SEVERAL THOUSAND PEOPLE CAMPING IN SCHOOLS AND TEMPLES, SOME 12,OOO BEING STILL RESCUED FROM INACCESSIBLE AREAS. 13,131 HOUSES REPORTED DAMAGED IN TAMIL NADU AND 20,000 IN KARAIKAL REGION. CROP LOSSES: 35,685 HECTARES IN TAMIL NADU, 5,735 IN KARAIKAL.

3. RESTORATION OF ELECTRICITY, TELECOMMUNICATIONS, ROAD AND RAIL LINKS IN PROGRESS. gOVERNMENT IN CONTROL OF SITUATION AND NOT REQUESTING INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.
