The DEC Member Agencies are actively sharing information on the emergency situation in Bihar India following the flooding caused by monsoon rains and the Kosi River breaking its banks. The situation is grave with the UN's disaster information service quoting:

- 2 million people are affected

- 250,000 homes destroyed

- a death toll predicted to go to much higher (currently 50 )

- families are unlikely to be able to return home for months rather than days or weeks

- access is a real problem with very poor infrastructure and few boats available for rescue work

- the river and flooded areas are ill prepared with few large communal shelters

DEC agencies are already in the region and are carrying out life saving work, but the picture remains confused and humanitarian assessments are ongoing. The DEC Trustees will monitor the situation to see if and when an appeal might be necessary.
