Since the end of July, Northern India and Bangladesh have witnessed the worst flooding in recent years. Torrential rains have caused the flooding of numerous villages and farmland. More than 200 people have died in both countries.
In China, heavy rain along the banks of the Huaihe River, southern Yangzi River, as well as northwestern and southwestern China has led to devastating flash floods, landslides, and mudflows. The floods have killed more than 332 people impacting over 5 million people in the region. The areas hardest hit by flooding is the Chongqing municipality and the Anhui and Jiangsu provinces.
ERD is working in partnership with Action by Churches Together (ACT) to assist displaced families with a particular focus on widows, children, the elderly, and the disabled in the affected countries. ERD is working with Church Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) in India.
In Bangladesh, families have received family relief packs with basic food items such as rice and potatoes. Clothing has been provided. In India, ERD is assisting in the distribution of water purification tablets, bleaching powder, and dry rations to more than 17,000 families. Tarpaulin sheets are being used to build temporary shelter for displaced families. ERD is also assisting in the repair and construction of huts. Emergency aid such as rice, a quilt, a blanket, and a mosquito net were dispensed to 4,000 families in China. ERD is helping in the rebuilding of six schools, five drinking water systems, five clinics, and 500 homes in the Chongquing municipality and the Anhui and Jiangsu provinces.
