SITUATION UPDATE AND RESPONSE

Cyclone Remal made landfall on the coasts near the Bay of Bengal on Sunday, leaving 39 dead in the northeast. Dozens are reportedly missing.

Hundreds were forced to take shelter in relief camps as rain destroyed homes and knocked down power lines. Mizoram has been the worst-hit state in the region.
Mizoram
-
Cyclone Remal caused extensive damage, leading to 30 fatalities in the Melthum, Hlimen, Falkawn, and Salem Veng areas of Aizawl, the capital.

A quarry collapse on the outskirts of Aizawl claimed 14 lives, and severe landslides in neighboring regions accounted for another 14 deaths.

Connectivity is severely disrupted due to landslides on National Highway 6 at Hunthar and other intra-state highways.

Over 30 families have been relocated, and several cemeteries in Aizawl town have been damaged by landslides.

Hundreds sought shelter in relief camps as heavy rains destroyed homes and knocked down power lines.

Rescue efforts involve state disaster response teams, paramilitary forces, Young Mizo Association members, and local volunteers.
Assam

Heavy rainfall and strong winds resulted in four deaths and 18 injuries.

Nagaland

Cyclone Remal claimed four lives and damaged more than 40 houses.

Devastating wind speeds caused multiple house and tree collapses, complicating rescue operations.
Meghalaya

Heavy rain from Cyclone Remal resulted in two deaths and over 500 injuries.

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) reported 134 people across 17 villages were affected, with 29 houses damaged.

Mudslides near Sonapur tunnel and East Jaintia Hills disrupted traffic.
Tripura

Although no casualties were reported, heavy rains forced 746 people from 246 families to seek shelter in relief camps.

Flooding in low-lying areas, particularly along the Haora and Gomati rivers, impacted vast areas of agricultural land.

Six houses were completely destroyed, and hundreds more were damaged.

The cyclone caused significant damage to the power infrastructure, with around 82 transformers out of operation and over 600 poles dismantled. The initial estimated cost of losses is around Rs 2.5 crore.
Manipur

Heavy rains and gusty winds led to flash floods in the Imphal valley.

The Nambul and Imphal rivers breached danger levels, causing significant flooding in low-lying areas.

River waters entered houses and inundated streets in some parts of Imphal.

A bridge connecting Vakho village and Karong in Senapati district was swept away.

Authorities closed Awang Sekmai Bridge over Sekmai River and Hangelthong over Imphal River at Maibakhul until further notice.
GOVERNMENT RESPONSE

Indian Army and Assam Rifles carrying out rescue and relief operations in cyclone Remal affected areas of Manipur, Mizoram, and Kohima.

Mizoram Chief Minister has donated Rs 50,000 to Young Mizo Association volunteers and announced a ₹15 crore State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF), along with ₹4 lakh ex gratia for each deceased person.

In Assam, 115 Relief camps have been set up including Patharkandi, distributing essential supplies to flood-affected people.

The Assam Chief Secretary led a review meeting in Guwahati to assess the situation.

In Nagaland, the NDRF deployed an underwater drone for search operations.

Manipur government has directed schools to stay closed until May 31 as a precautionary measure; examinations have been postponed, and sessions at all Manipur University departments and centres have been cancelled.

Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) engineers and workers are working round-the-clock to restore rail services but heavy rain and adverse weather conditions badly affected the restoration work.

PRDA is distributing food items, shelter equipment, GI sheet, tarpaulin with the support of national NGOs in Manipur.
