SITUATION:

Some 1,000 persons died in flashfloods and landslides triggered by continuous rain since July 24, in India's western state of Maharashtra. Thirty-seven inches of rain in one day -- the heaviest rain ever recorded in Indian history -- fell in Mumbai, the state's busy coastal and commercial district. More than 500 persons died in Mumbai -- drowned, buried in mud, or electrocuted.

Early damage reports indicate more than 10,000 homes collapsed and at least 750 acres of cropland were destroyed, with loss of livestock. There is also widespread damage to public infrastructure -- transportation systems, health clinics, schools, water and sanitation systems, etc. Relief Web reports 20 percent of the population of Maharashtra affected (approx. 20 million people). The biggest concern for humanitarian agencies working in the region: the affect on poor communities both in the city and rural areas where people living in deplorable conditions in makeshift shelters lack safe drinking water and are threatened by potential water and airborne diseases. Food shortages are also a major concern.

CWS RESPONSE:

CWS is supporting long-time partner Churches Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA), which has been engaged in long-term development in the region for many years. CASA is working with its local partners and will enlist members of local communities in its work.

CASA began administering relief aid July 25 and will continue its response through October, continuing to coordinate and implement assistance for 15,000 persons in three districts of Maharashtra -- Thane, Raigadh, and Ratnagiri.

CASA assistance includes distribution of food and non-food item packages.

Food Item packages:

- Packages including 10 kg rice, 2 kg lentils, and 1 litre cooking oil, 1 kg sugar and 1 kg salt.

Non-food items:

- 12,000 sets containing: one wool blanket, one dhoti, one sari, nine aluminium utensils, two sleeping mats, a water storage container and a plastic mug.

- 3,000 sets containing 1 lungi, 1 sari, 2 bed sheets, a water storage container, and a plastic mug.

- 15,000 Hygiene Kits containing soap, washing powder, and cotton towels.

- 25,000 notebooks and 5,000 writing/drawing kits will be distributed to 5,000 children

CWS is issuing appeal -- #6977 India (Maharashtra) Flood Response -- and is seeking $75,000 in support of the targeted funding request from Action By Churches Together ACT (ref. ASIN52) for $363,971.

Details regarding specific budget items are available upon request.
