DIMAPUR: A powerful bomb explosion near Hongkong Market and Dimapur railway station Wednesday morning killed one person and injured another. The blast also partially damaged a flyover in the area and a godown located below the bridge.

Official sources said the blast took place around 8am below the flyover in a garbage dump. The intensity of the blast was so high that it created a crater and damaged the pillar of the bridge, besides shattering the walls of a godown.

The deceased, identified as Pradeep Thapa (29), was crossing the area on his motorcycle when he was hit by splinters. He was killed on the spot and his motorcycle was also shattered.

A 12-year-old boy, Zubeir Ahmed, who was in the godown under the bridge, went into deep shock when the godown wall collapsed. He was hospitalized with a breathing problem but was released soon.

SP Dimapur V Z Angami and DC Dimapur Hushili Sema rushed to the spot along with police officials. The bomb disposal squads of both the state police and the army were also called in. Police said the bomb was an improvised IED and was planted below a staircase leading to the flyover.

Investigations are on but police have ruled out the hand of local miscreants. The state government has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 1 lakh to the next of the kin of the deceased.

Chief minister Neiphiu Rio, while condemning the incident, said this violent act is unacceptable in a civilized society and was carried out to perpetrate fear.
