Avalanche claims 5 lives in Chamba

SHIMLA: Five persons were killed while two others injured in an avalanche at Jungra panchayat of Tissa sub-division of Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh on Thursday afternoon. Heavy snowfall in the higher reaches of the state has led to avalanche threats. The Union ministry of defence had issued avalanche warning recently.

Those killed and injured in the natural calamity belong to nomadic Gujjar tribe of Himachal. The dead include Lal Sen, Usuf, Rasim Muhammad, Haneef Muhammad and Baghusan. The injured have been identified as Musa and Haneef.

The victims were heading for a function at a nearby village when the avalanche hit them. Some passers-by witnessed them being engulfed by the avalanche and informed the administration. Chamba deputy commissioner Sharab Chhopel Negi said that bodies have been recovered and the injured admitted to a hospital nearby.
