For the past few weeks, India has seen some of the worst monsoon flooding in living memory. Across northern India, countless villages have been flooded, leaving tens of millions displaced and stranded. ACT member Church's Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) are reporting, that about 200 people have lost their lives, while thousands of people have been affected in the states of Assam, West Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. Tens of thousands of people are camped out in relief camps set up by the government. In the state of Assam, people have taken refuge in emergency camps or have been cut off in their villages by receding waters and soaring temperatures, which have led to concerns of potential disease outbreaks.
Safe water, food and shelter are among the items most needed to help families cope. Government forces are now using helicopters to drop relief supplies, but they can only meet the needs of a fraction of the displaced population. The Indian Government says more than 1,100 people have died in this year's monsoon rains, not including the latest casualties. In Assam, Bihar, Orissa and West Bengal, CASA plans to provide clothing, utensils and blankets to 2,500 families affected by the floods, including plastic sheeting for 500 families to provide support in the reconstruction of basic shelters. CASA is planning to distribute some of their pre-positioned emergency supplies.
CASA is working with the local churches, government and other partners, and coordinating its information related to this response with ACT member Lutheran World Service in India (LWSI). The total duration for this response is planned for four months.
