New Delhi (dpa) - At least 12 persons were reported missing while trying to flee floodwaters which inundated parts of the capital of the northeastern Indian state of Assam on Wednesday.
The floods also entered Kaziranga National Park, home of the endangered one-horned rhinoceros, as wildlife officials launched operations to move animals to higher ground.
About 25,000 people in the Assam capital of Guwahati have been affected by floods. Officials said the situation could worsen if the Brahmaputra river, the lifeline of the state, continued to rise.
The floods in the state have left nearly 700,000 people stranded. Meanwhile two persons were reported killed in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh due to landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains.
