On Tuesday, Chief Security Advisor to the Prime Minister György Bakondi told public television channel M1 that the border fence is an important physical barrier, without which Hungary would not even stand a chance of containing the migration wave.
Replying to statements claiming that the border fence is unnecessary, Mr. Bakondi said that before the green border was closed last year, as many as eight to ten thousand illegal migrants were entering the country every day, thus if it were not for the fence, hundreds of thousands of migrants would now be in the country.
As for the Romanian-Hungarian border section, he said that the Romanian and Hungarian border protection bodies have been cooperating effectively, and for the time being construction of a fence there is not necessary. He added that preparatory work – such as earthworks – has been carried out, but immediate action is not warranted.
