HONDURAS - Forced Recruitment and execution of Children by organized armed groups (UNICEF, ECHO, Media)
On 4 May, five children that were under state custody in a juvenile detention facility in Northern Honduras were executed by an armed group that broke into the facility. These children join the eight others that were recently killed in a poor neighbourhood in S. Pedro Sula for not joining the dominant armed group.
Forced recruitment of children by armed groups and street gangs is prevalent in Central America but reaches significant proportions in Honduras.
The number of central American children, accompanied or alone, fleeing their countries has doubled each year since 2010, according to the UNHCR report. The US government, estimates that only in 2014 some 60,000 children will be reaching the United States territory in search of safe haven. Moreover, the forced displacement of violence-affected population is not exclusively affecting children as there has been in the USA a documented 432% increase in the number of asylum applications from Citizens of central American countries since 2009.
