Emergency assistance to the republic of Honduras for torrential rain disaster

  1. On October 23 (Thursday), the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods (tents, portable jerry cans, water purifiers, blankets, etc.) equivalent to about 13 million yen to the Republic of Honduras, which has been suffering disaster from torrential rain caused by Tropical Depression. No. 16.

2. In Honduras, where it has been raining from early October, Tropical Depression. No. 16 raked the country from the east to the north from the 15th to the 17th, affecting about 130 thousand people including 13 dead and 6 missing and damaging more than four thousand houses.

3. In the damaged areas at present, the number of affected people is increasing, because transportation is obstructed at many points by floods and landslides, and the recovery work is delayed as the rain continues. While making utmost efforts to assist the affected people, the Government of Honduras has requested emergency assistance to the Government of Japan, as it is faced with a serious shortage of materials stock for emergency use such as food and temporary housing.

4. At the request of the Government of Honduras, the Government of Japan has decided to extend this emergency assistance to Honduras in light of humanitarian relief, as well as based upon the friendly relations between Japan and the Republic of Honduras.
