In May, WFP reached 841,530 beneficiaries with USD 10 million in cash-based transfers (CBT) and 1,146 mt in food. The amount of CBT distributed over the month is an all-time record for the WFP Haiti country office, underscoring its delivery capacity.

As part of its emergency response, WFP transferred USD 8.8 million to 333,850 people in the Artibonite, Centre, Nippes, Nord, Nord-Est, Nord-Ouest, Ouest, Sud and Sud-Est departments. In addition, WFP distributed 241.6 mt of food commodities to 36,590 people in the Ouest and Nord departments. WFP also resumed its hot meals assistance in two towns at the border with the Dominican Republic on 15 May and distributed 8,826 hot meals throughout the month.

Under the school feeding programme, WFP reached 429,736 school children with 5,906 mt in the Artibonite, Grand’Anse, Centre, Nord, Nord-Est, NordOuest, Ouest, Sud-Est, Nippes and Sud departments. This included 178,181 school children assisted through the home-grown school feeding programme with 2,143 mt of food.

As part of WFP’s resilience activities, 5,150 people conducted rehabilitation activities and construction of community assets in the departments of Artibonite, Grand'Anse, Nord, Nord-Est and Sud. A total of USD 499,758 was distributed to the participants and their family members (25,750 people in total).

In addition, under the nutrition activities, 7,225 children were screened for malnutrition, of which 275 were found malnourished and referred to health centers for their care. 14,135 people also participated in awareness-raising sessions on hygiene, nutrition and malnutrition.

Furthermore, WFP supported the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor in implementing the Adaptive Social Protection for Increased Resilience project (social protection), assisting 98,120 people with USD 782,335 in the Grand’Anse department.

WFP, in partnership with the General Directorate of Civil Protection and the Hydrometeorological unit of Haiti, organized a two-day workshop in Port-au-Prince on anticipatory action related to the risks of floods and hurricane, bringing together approximately 30 participants from the Government, Civil Society and United Nations Agencies. Anticipatory actions were recognized as crucial due to the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather events. Specific activities like anticipatory cash transfers were identified as effective measures to be implemented under anticipatory schemes. Capacity building and simulation exercises were proposed to strengthen integration of anticipatory actions into the national disaster risk management system.

Through its maritime service, WFP transported 386 mt of cargo over 29 voyages supporting 9 partners in May.
