HIGHLIGHTS
- March 2025 was marked by further escalations in armed group violence, resulting in further displacements in Port-au-Prince and significant new displacements in the Centre department. In addition, clashes between armed groups and the Haitian National Police (HNP) led to another casualty of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM).
- Amidst the deteriorating security situation, there have been increased alerts of suspected cholera cases - with seven confirmed cases reported in West and Centre departments.
- In response to the various crises, UNICEF continues to deliver critical life-saving services ranging from Nutrition to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services, with more than 67,153 children reached. From the 2025 Humanitarian Action for Children appeal, US$23.1 million is currently available for humanitarian interventions. However, a funding gap of 92 per cent remains, leaving many vulnerable children and their families without critical lifesaving assistance.
SITUATION OVERVIEW AND HUMANITARIAN NEEDS
March 2025 witnessed further escalations in armed group violence, particularly in Port-au-Prince (PaP) and Centre department, resulting in a significant increase in displacements. According to the IOM Emergency Tracking Tool (ETT), more than 23,000 people were displaced following an eruption of armed group violence in downtown Port-au-Prince, including Bois Verna, Carrerfour-Feuilles, and Bas Peu de Chose, among others, since 11 March. Of the 23,000 displaced, about 20,700 were displaced in 15 internally displaced persons (IDP) sites. In addition, the ETT also recorded a further increase in the number of displaced persons since 14 February, with the number of displaced persons rising from 28,000 to more than 42,000 in PaP, of which more than 28,600 are housed across 41 IDP sites.
In Saut d’Eau in Centre department, armed group attacks since 1 March resulted in the displacement of 6,642 persons, the majority (6,350 persons) of which sought refuge with host families, while the remaining 292 persons were displaced in three IDP sites. The escalating violence continues to exacerbate the already-dire conditions of the most vulnerable populations in Haiti.
In addition to the increased displacements, the surge in armed group violence has also resulted in the second casualty of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM), when a Kenyan officer was killed in Artibonite. In PaP, four Médecins San Frontières vehicles were shot during staff evacuation, resulting in injuries to one staff member.
The reporting period also saw a surge in suspected cholera cases. As of 15 March, WHO reported 948 suspected cases of cholera across all ten departments. Among these, seven confirmed cases have been reported in West and Centre departments.
According to the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), at least 1,518 people were killed and 572 injured between 1 January to 27 March 2025, as a result of armed groups violence, self-defence groups and operations by security forces.
