UN Human Rights expert William O’Neill begins visit to Haiti

GENEVA/PORT-AU-PRINCE – The UN Designated Expert on Human Rights in Haiti, William O’Neill, today begins a week-long visit to the country. It is his fourth since being appointed to the role by UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk in April 2023, at the request of the UN Human Rights Council.

In the capital, Port-au-Prince, O’Neill is expected to meet with the President of the Transitional Presidential Council (TPC), Leslie Voltaire, Prime Minister Alix Fils Aime, and other senior government officials, as well as representatives of the National Human Rights Institution. He will also hold discussions with UN leadership in the country, senior members of the diplomatic corps, religious leaders and civil society organisations.

The expert will visit a prison for children, and he will also meet with victims, including of sexual violence.

Given the agenda, O’Neill will not hold a press conference in Haiti at the end of his visit. However, he will speak at a press engagement at UN headquarters in New York on 11 March, which media will be able to join either in person or online. More details will be shared in due course.
