Joint Press Release
27 January 2025 - The government of the Republic of Korea announced today a significant financial contribution to the United Nations' humanitarian initiatives in Haiti, underscoring its ongoing commitment to global humanitarian efforts. A total of US$ six million was allocated to support critical programmes aimed at addressing the urgent needs of the Haitian people through UNICEF, UN OCHA and UNDP, with each agency receiving US$ two million.
This funding not only highlights the Republic of Korea’s broader commitment to supporting the well-being and future of the Haitian children, but also strengthens the strong and enduring bilateral ties between the Republic of Korea and Haiti. It allows UNICEF to help ensure children have access to safe learning environments where they can nurture their minds and escape the trauma of conflict, working closely with Government of Haiti and local partners. It also strengthens the availability of vital medical services, safeguarding children from harm and providing them with the care and support they urgently need to heal and thrive.
Korean Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, concurrent to Haiti, HE LEE Sang Ryul, stressed that “among others, I expect the humanitarian support contributes to providing better health care and education for Haitian children since the Republic of Korea has learned through its history and economic development that they are the future of the country.”
For her part, UNICEF Representative to Haiti, Ms Geeta Narayan, expressed her gratitude for this support: “We are deeply grateful for this partnership, a testament of the Republic of Korea’s trust in UNICEF and our unwavering commitment to the well-being of children affected by the devastating crises in Haiti. This support will allow UNICEF and partners to give children in Haiti access to services such as health and education, so that children can be ready to build a brighter future for Haiti.”
These contributions reflect the Republic of Korea’s role as an active and responsible state in global humanitarian and development efforts. Through its partnerships, the Republic of Korea continues to help address critical global challenges, fostering cooperation and partnership for a better future for people in Haiti.
