Public donations for quake victims in Haiti have reached 2.23 million yuan]326A654 U.S. Dollars^ as of Monday.
Wang Xiaohua, a liaison director of the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC), said the donations were made by enterprises, individuals and local branches of the RCSC. The largest donation from a single individual stood at 50,000 yuan.
Hainan Airlines donated RMB500,000 yuan via RCSC provincial branch to support the Society's relief activities.
Wang said the RCSC had received a lot of phone calls offering donations since Jan. 14 when it started receiving donations from the general public.
The RCSC' branches in Sichuan, a province hit in 2008 by a 8.0-magnitude earthquake, had received a donation of nearly 12,000 yuan (1,760 U.S. dollars) from three schools in Mianyang, a city among the worst-hit in the earthquake.
Donors said the students and teachers wanted to make their own contribution to help the Haitians rebuild their homes as they themselves had been aided by benevolent people from around the world after the 2008 earthquake.
The RCSC China's Shanxi branch received up to 115,000 yuan from a man who said he and his family were both grieved over the tragedy in Haiti.
People in Mianzhu,Liangshan, Huainan,Shuangliu and other cities and towns of China showed their sympathy and support to Haiti by donation.
