More aid for Haiti/Dominican Republic, Sep 2004

AJWS is sending more humanitarian aid to the people affected by floods caused by tropical storms in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

The island of Hispaniola has already suffered devastation from floods in May of this year that killed 2,000 people and displaced several thousand. AJWS has been working with local communities to rebuild and provide essential services to the displaced.

While many still have not recovered from that disaster, floods from the latest Tropical Storm Jeanne have so far killed more than 1,000 people; another 1,000 are missing and are presumed dead. Flooding has wreaked havoc, leaving more than 250,000 people homeless.

For several years, AJWS has partnered with non-governmental, community-based organizations in Haiti and the Dominican Republic on sustainable community development projects that are designed, implemented and managed by the organized poor. Funded projects have provided access to new technology and training to combat deforestation and increase agricultural success, and provide literacy, vocational and business skills training.

AJWS will continue to partner with these local groups to provide emergency relief - food, shelter and medicine - and long term development support to those impoverished communities that have suffered from the severe flooding in the region.
