Launch of Haiti Emergency Appeal by Kenya Red Cross

Following the earthquake disaster in Haiti on 12th January 2010, that claimed more than 50,000 lives and left millions of people homeless and in dire need of humanitarian assistance, the Kenya Red Cross Secretary (KRCS) has launched a local humanitarian appeal, which provides a platform for donations from Kenya to assist those affected in Haiti.

Governments, humanitarian agencies and well-wishers across the world are currently coordinating and responding to the Haiti emergency appeal. KRCS has received numerous requests from the public, Members of Parliament, the international community residing in the country and well-wishers, to launch a local appeal for donations to assist those affected by the earthquake disaster in Haiti.

As a National Society, we appreciate the enormous humanitarian support Kenya receives from the international community whenever disasters strike our country.

The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is launching a preliminary emergency appeal seeking a total of 10 million Swiss francs (10 million US dollars/6.8 million euro) to deliver assistance an initial 20,000 families affected by the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday.

PRESS EVENT: The launch of Haiti Emergency Appeal will be done during a press conference at the New Stanley Hotel, Nairobi, on 15th January 2010, from 2.30pm.
