ROME, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Italian army is ready to join relief efforts in Haiti which was hit by a devastating earthquake, Italian military sources said on Friday.

An engineering corps with experience in disaster relief has been on standby, the ANSA news agency quoted the sources as saying, adding the engineers could start relief work "over the next few days."

Italy's civil defense department has sent a fact-finding team along with doctors and a field hospital to Port-au-Prince.

The accurate casualties of the Tuesday catastrophic quake are unknown yet, while Haitian President Rene Preval said he had received reports of death tolls ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 from the magnitude-7.3 quake.
